Brébeuf Island

Located in Georgian Bay just off the western side of Beausoleil Island, Brébeuf Island is a rugged and storied landmass. Named after Jean de Brébeuf, a 17th-century French Jesuit missionary, this relatively small island is more of a granite outcropping in the bay. Its rocky surface is dotted with vibrant orange and green lichen, a few windswept pines, and an old red-and-white lighthouse.

The island’s most notable feature is the Brébeuf Island Front Range Light Tower, a historic lighthouse operated and maintained by the Canadian Coast Guard. Built as both a light tower and a keeper’s dwelling, its white clapboard exterior, red-trimmed windows, and bright red roof give it classic maritime charm. Designed to withstand the unforgiving elements, the lighthouse was constructed using durable materials suited to the island’s remote and rocky terrain. For over a century, it has been an important navigational aid in guiding boaters through treacherous waters. This valued heritage site is also federally recognized for its architectural and historical significance (FHBRO).

Beyond its historical importance, Brébeuf Island is a sanctuary of natural beauty. Its rugged shoreline, shaped by ages of wind and water, remains largely untouched. The island provides a haven for wildlife, with flocks of cormorants often spotted sunning themselves among the rocky outcroppings. The surrounding waters, clear and deep blue, offer a stunning contrast to the weathered granite of the island itself. Brébeuf Island remains a quiet but enduring landmark, a place where history and wilderness intertwine. Its timeless beauty and steadfast lighthouse stand as a testament to Georgian Bay’s maritime past and untamed spirit.
